John Auld, the second son of Alexander and Elizabeth Auld(m.s. Sutherland)>, a ‘Farm Servant’, married Angusina Monro, a Domestic Worker, in Port Dunbar, Wick on the 6th June 1867. The marriage certificate shows Angusina, aged 28, was the daughter of Donald , a farmer, and his wife, Barbara Monro (m.s.Monro). Witnesses at the wedding were John Henderson and John’s youngest sister, Catherine.
Angusina, also known as Sina, was one of four children. In 1851 the family were living at Strathy Point, Farr, Sutherland where their father, Donald, was a farmer of only 2 acres.
A daughter, Catherine, was born to Angusina about two weeks later on the 19th June 1867. Sadly she died of pneumonia on the 6th April 1869.
In 1871 John and Augustina were living in Wellington Street, Wick where he was described as a 'Farm Worker'. Living with them as a boarder was Allan McDonald, a 37 year old fisherman born in Skye.
The 1881 Census (L.D.S. transcription) shows that John Auld, a lorryman, and his wife, Ann J. Auld, aged 44, were living at 3 Springhill Place, Dundee. There is obviously a mistake with Angusina’s first name as there is with her place of birth. It is shown as Farr, Sunderland instead of Sutherland! This is typical of errors that creep into transcriptions even after being carefully checked.
There is no further news on them until 1901 when Angusina appears to be staying with James and Wilhemina Arnot and their five children in the ’back of’ Canongate, Edinburgh. She is shown as a 63 year old widow and ‘Mother’ born in Sutherlandshire. It is doubtful if she is the mother of James Arnot, who was a 44 year old ‘Foreman Porter, Railway’ born in Kirkaldy, Fife but more likely of his wife, Wilhelmina, aged 41, who declared that she was born in Sutherlandshire.
James and Wilhelmina were actually married on the 18th June 1886 at 65 Lower Vieweraig Row, Edinburgh. The Marriage Register shows her as Wilhelmina Munro Auld, a 26 year old spinster, the daughter of John Auld, a Porter (Provision Store) and Angusina Auld (nee Munro). This would imply that she was born about 1860 some seven years before her parents were married.
So far no official record has been found to confirm Wilhelmina/Williamina's date or place of birth.
Additional Information
There is a record of the death of a John Auld, aged 54, in the Bellingham District of Northumberland in 1897. The age is right but nothing else to confirm a positive connection.
James Arnot died on the 17th September 1932 at Hillend, Inverkeithing, Fife aged 77 and his wife, Wilhelmina/Williamina, on the 26th October 1950 at 46 Craigmiller Park, Edinburgh aged 95
