Elizabeth Auld
1849 to 1922

Elizabeth was the third child of John and Isabella Oal(Auld) and born in Staxigoe about 1849.

By 1880 she was working as a domestic servant in Edinburgh most probably at No. 4, Church Hill, which was the address shown on her marriage certificate.

On the 4th June 1880 she married 29 year old Henry Grant, described as a 'Railway Stoker' at No. 10 South Elgin Street, Edinburgh.

Henry, born in No. 7 Argyll Square, Pulteneytown, Wick on the 27th December 1850, was the son of John Grant, a Boat Carpenter, and Jane (m.s. Taylor)

Their only child, Isabella, was born on the 13th May, 1882 in the family home, 148 Albert Street, Edinburgh

Henry eventually became a 'Steam Engine Driver' but, due to ill health, had to retire about 1900. He died in Albert Street in June 1905, aged 54.

Elizabeth continued to live at 148 Albert Street until her death on the 8th October 1922. She was shown in the Death Register as a 68 year old 'Railway Waiting Room Attendent'. There seems to be a slight discrepency in her age. She was more likely to have been 73 years old.

On the 30th December 1903 Isabella married 31 year old Robert Hutchison at No. 148 Albert Street, Edinburgh 'After banns and publication according to the forms of the Congregational Church'.

Robert Hutchison, of No.8 St.John's Square, Motherwell, was a boilermaker and son of James Hutchison, a Fruit and Vegetable Merchant, and Ellen (m.s. Rintoul).

They had two sons, James Rintoul Hutchison born 3rd November, 1906 at 19 McDonald Road, Edinburgh and Henry Grant Hutchison born on the 3rd April 1909 at 21 Easter Road, Edinburgh.

Robert and Isabella seperated just about the time that their second son, Henry, was born. Isabella and her two sons eventually went to live with her widowed mother at 148 Albert Street.

Robert died in the Western District Hospital, Glasgow on the 22nd January 1915 and Isabella in the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh on the 7th December 1965. They never divorced.

James died in August 1982.

Additional Information

When Elizabeth's mother, Isabella, died in Staxigoe on the 5th September 1903 the informant was William Bain, shown as her nephew. He gave his address as 148 Albert Street where Elizabeth and Henry were living. The 1901 census shows that at least four families were living in 148 Albert Street although William Bain was not shown at that time.
